Summer Adventure Camp in Irvine: A Hands-On Summer Program for Curious Young Learners

Finding the right summer program for young children can be challenging for Orange County families. Parents often want more than simple childcare or entertainment, they want a safe, engaging environment where children can continue learning, building confidence, and exploring new interests during the summer months.

At Westcliff Early Learning Academy (WELA) in Irvine, Calif. our Summer Adventure Camp is designed to give children ages 3–6 a hands-on, engaging experience rooted in curiosity and discovery. Inspired by Montessori, Reggio Emilia, nature-based education, and STEM learning, the program encourages children to stay active, creative, and connected throughout the summer months.

Rather than treating summer as a pause in learning, WELA creates an environment where curiosity naturally leads the way.

A Different Kind of Summer Program in Irvine

Many Orange County summer camps focus primarily on entertainment or high-energy activities. WELA’s Summer Adventure Camp takes a more intentional approach designed around how young children naturally learn and develop.

Every week introduces a new adventure that blends science, creativity, movement, sensory learning, and exploration. Children are not simply observing activities, they are actively participating in them.

During “Sweet Explorers: Ice Cream Discovery,” children become junior scientists while exploring simple chemistry concepts through hands-on ice cream making. “Ocean Explorers” transforms water play into opportunities for marine discovery, movement, and sensory exploration. In “Dino Discovery Lab,” children dig for fossils, investigate dinosaurs, and engage with tactile materials that encourage scientific thinking and imaginative play.

Other themed weeks include live reptile encounters, rainbow science experiments, birdhouse engineering projects, camping adventures, and even a mobile petting zoo experience during “Little Farmers” week.

Each theme is intentionally designed to spark curiosity while helping children build confidence, communication skills, creativity, and early STEM foundations.

Why Hands-On Summer Learning Matters

Research consistently shows that young children learn best through active, hands-on experiences. During the early years, the brain develops rapidly through movement, sensory interaction, experimentation, and meaningful social engagement.

This is why WELA’s summer program emphasizes exploration over passive instruction.

When children build birdhouses, experiment with colors and light, observe reptiles, or create ocean habitats, they are naturally developing skills connected to science, engineering, creativity, problem-solving, and critical thinking. These moments may feel playful to children, but they build important developmental foundations that support future academic success.

At WELA, STEM learning is woven naturally into the daily experience rather than taught through rigid lessons or worksheets. Curiosity drives the process, helping children develop a positive relationship with learning from an early age.

The WELA Difference

What makes WELA’s Summer Adventure Camp unique is its blended educational philosophy and thoughtfully designed environment.

Inspired by Montessori education, children are encouraged to build independence, make choices, and engage deeply with hands-on materials. Reggio Emilia–inspired experiences encourage creativity, collaboration, and inquiry-based exploration. Nature-based learning helps children connect with the world around them through outdoor play, observation, and sensory experiences.

These approaches come together within a modern Irvine campus intentionally designed to support movement, creativity, and discovery.

Families also benefit from:

  • Small, supportive learning environments
  • On-site security
  • Nutritious meals and snacks included daily
  • Vietnamese dual-language exposure
  • Experienced educators who understand early childhood development
  • Flexible scheduling and extended care options

As part of the broader Westcliff University ecosystem, WELA brings a strong emphasis on educational quality, safety, and whole-child development to its early learning programs. With more than 30 years experience in higher education with College of Business, Technology, Education and Nursing as well as Western State College of Law, having this connection brings real experience in the educational pipeline. Not to mention the incredible championship winning athletics program that Westcliff has which will be partnering with WELA during this Summer Camp to bring coaches out to teach the next generation of athletes.

A Summer Experience Designed for Young Children

Unlike programs designed for broad age ranges, WELA’s Summer Adventure Camp is specifically tailored for children ages 3–6. Activities, schedules, transitions, and learning experiences are intentionally aligned with the developmental needs of early learners.

Each day balances energy and exploration with creativity, rest, and reflection. Mornings often begin with community-building activities before children move into STEM exploration, art, music, movement, nature play, and collaborative experiences throughout the day.

This rhythm helps children remain engaged while also feeling supported and emotionally secure.

By the end of the summer, children leave with more than memories. They leave more independent, more curious, and more confident in their ability to explore and learn.
